Soooooo...anyone know if Shaun Hutson and Guy N Smith are still at each others necks? I vaguely remember a while back that Shaun said something jokingly in an interview about reading one of GNS's novels whilst waiting for a train one day and thinking "f*ck me...I can do better than this", and hence he started writing horror novels. Guy took exception to this and for a long time the two were sworn enemies. Anyone know if this feud is still going on? It was a long old time ago when the interview took place, so I was thinking that it may all be water under the bridge now.

I read an interview written back in 96 about a famous horror author reading a Guy N smith book and saying he could do better but it wasn't Shaun Hutson.

Was there ever a feud, though? I always got the impression that Guy shrugged off potshots from fellow writers.

Yeah, I'm not sure I want to actually ask Shaun himself if he's got a problem with Guy or not. Not really the sort of thing you can ask someone without coming across as a complete twat.
I may well be wrong about the whole thing (my girlfriend often informs me that I have a rather hazy memory on most things). I could have sworn it was an interview with someone like Jonathan Ross or something. We're talking around the early 90's here. Probably around the realease date of 'Heathen'...that god awful excuse for a novel!
Guy N Smith could have retorted in 'Fear' magazine if anyone has any copies lurking around. I'll have a look through a few of my copies tonight.
Again...I could be completely wrong about this. I just have a vague memory of something like that happening. However, it wouldn't be the first time my crazy brain has invented something and then logged it away as a memory!!!!

You found the actual interview I was talking about? Nice work man! Gold stars for you!!!!
I can't actually watch it at the moment (in work) but I'll have a look when I get home tonight.
I'm so glad it wasn't all just some bizarre figment of my imagination. After a while, you begin to question your own sanity!!! Hahahahaha.
Anyway...if it's the interview I was thinking of, Hutson tells his little story about how he got into writing horror fiction via slagging off good old Guy. I'm pretty sure that Guy came back at Shaun in a magazine or something ('Fear' or 'Samhain' maybe) and so the feud began.

i'm pretty sure he does, i was off all last week with captain trips and i was on the net and found the interview, he comes on wearing his liverpool shirt and puts his scarf on as well, and i think (but not sure) that its vinnie jones sitting next to him, so it could of been to wind vinnie up.
he's a bit of a pretentious prick though so its no surprise that he slags off other writers on TV, his novels aint even that good.
anyone else thing that Slugs was The Rats all over again?

To be honest, I'm rather fond of both Hutson & Smith. They both have their merits and they both have their flaws. Slagging off fellow horror authors is a foolish and cocky move, which I'm pretty sure Hutson regretted afterwards. Hutson's story of why he got into horror writing is probably true, but he should not have announced that it was from one of Smith's novels. Slugs is just Rats all over again? Dude...that's pretty much all that any of the creature vs mankind novels are. It's the same tale just a different enemy. Well...there are some exceptions, but only a handful. You've got to love them though. Mindless pulp horror loveliness!!!!

i didnt say it was bad ;D just that i wondered how he got away with that as it was like a carbon copy... but then again i cannot fault you on the 'creature v mankind' bit, you have a grand point there ha ha. i did prefer the rats though, to be prfectly honest lol.
but what about Shadows? that was just The Dark.
i do still pick up a hutson novel from time to time but i get a bit fed up with him after about 20 pages or so, im not really sure why though. i think its cos i got a bit jaded with the splatter horror after a while, which is what Hutson is all about. but he does spin a good yarn, i really liked Relics.

The link you posted doesn't go to the video clip. However, I searched for it and it came up with one interview with Hutson. This was indeed with Ross with Vinnie Jones also as a guest.
Alas, there was no mention of GNS throughout the interview. I dunno. Perhaps it's all in my head. Who knows!
The more I think about it, the more I think it was 'Night of the Crabs' that Shaun read and thought "I can doing better than this".
Can anyone else remember an interview with Hutson where he said something like this? My sanity is at stake here!!!

Firstly, it goes without saying that GNS is vastly superior to Hutson in every possible way, both as a writer and a person. Regarding the 'feud', it was entirely one sided. Hutson has said various times in interviews that he read Night Of The Crabs and thought it was so bad that he knew he could do better. But he clearly has no understanding of the classic pulp, of the kind GNS grew up reading and which he has emulated throughout his career. For no obvious reason, during the late 80s it became fashionable to have a pop at GNS. Hutson and Steve Harris both used to slag off Guy, particularly in Fear. I remember one particularly petty interview with Hutson in which he said GNS fertilised the vegetables on his 'farm' with piles of his unsold books. Harris, like Hutson, said he started writing after reading a Smith novel a thinking he could do better. He was wrong, which is why he only had about half a dozen novels published before everyone lost interest in him When did Harris last have a novel published, one wonders? The sheer number of books GNS has had in print compared to Hutson and Harris speaks for itself. Shaun Hutson is a moron, something that is very obvious in the Ross interview, something he proved beyond question on the James Whale show, and something he continues to prove every time he gives an interview.
