Someone who also remembers this 'feud' (whether one sided or not). Thank god for that. I thought I was going mad for a second there.
I'm getting the impression that you're somewhat of a Guy N Smith fan. Can't fault you on that handsome.
It does seem to be a bit of a dumbass move to slag off fellow contemporary authors in the same genre as you. All it will do is alienate some of your fanbase/potential fanbase, and make you look like a bit of a tit.
Hutson or Smith - I'd choose Smith every time. But I do still enjoy a healthy slab of Hutson in my reading diet, from time to time.
I salute you for your passion towards GNS by the way funkdooby.

Someone once said Hutson writes books for people who never normally read, and I'd go along with that. Every one of his novels that I've read (which is all, I think, bar the most recent two or three) seem to centre round grotesquely violent or repulsive set pieces. Plot, characterization, research, authenticity etc all seem to go out the window. Hutson gained notoriety and has capitalised on it. Nowt wrong with that, but sniping at other writers - particularly one who has a long history of success, and who is regarded is one of the most down to earth and approachable authors out there - was just plain idiotic. Something about Hutson has always jarred with me. For a start, he's a southerner who supports Liverpool. Another glory hunter from the days when they won everything. And that dubious barnet...and the ever present leather jacket...and the 'bad boy of horror' nonsense. It all just gets up my nose LOL

Just going to throw a cat amongst the pigeons here...
Hutson does know how to end a novel well though. Smith's greatest flaw, in my opinion, is that he struggles to wrap a story up well. His endings are usually a dissapointment.
Do you agree?

Some of the endings are very abrupt - The Island pissed off many fans, even though I LOVE that ending - but how about Blackout for a twist ending?

It appears I'm the only person here who has asked both Hutson and Smith about this 'feud,' and received answers from both.
I'd comment on some of the posts in this thread, but I'm biting my tongue....

I think we're all intrigued to know the answer...

I think we're all intrigued to know the answer... Yes, there was (and still is, to some extent). But the people who've cited the Ross interview as evidence are way off-base. The Hutson interview in question was an appearance on Wogan in the late 1980s - an interview which, as far as I know, is not on YouTube or any of the other sharing sites yet. Anyone wanting more information should pm me, as I don't want to post the details here. I may return to this thread later, as there have been some seriously inaccurate posts by one or two people.

I may return to this thread later, as there have been some seriously inaccurate posts by one or two people. Just read this last bit that you tagged on the end of your message. I think most if not all of the posts in this thread have been questions, queries and vague ponderings. Unless Hutson and Smith are actually the same person (anyone actually seen them in the same room together???) then I can't see how any of the posts have been so 'seriously inaccurate'. Is it possible to have an inaccurate query?

i juts wandered back to this thread, good to see the discussion is getting under way. an i think i'm gonna PM Darrel. Also i would just like to say that in comparison, since i am now aboard the good ship GNS, that i have found his writing to be MUCH better than Hutson's. for a start it doesnt seem so childish, and his novels flow better. thats just my oppinion though

Welcome aboard. It's a solid and sturdy ship, but has been known to hit some stormy seas (Metaphor Man eat your heart out). Yeah - I prefer our Smith to Hutson. Smith's pure pulp through and through. Pulp will always win abover splatter for me. I'd be interested to see what Darrell has to say, although I did find his post commenting on the supposed 'seriously inacurrate posts' quite annoyingly smug. Looking back, only Funkdooby actually posted up any info on the 'feud'...everyone else (including me) were simply asking questions and/or pondering on the reality of vague memories. A potential smiting is on the cards folks... Hahahhahahahaha...
