I have a question. Doesn't Guy get pissed off with the detractors of his work?
I remember Neil Gaiman's snotty dig at Guy's works on the James Herbert panel at last year's WHC, as well as his horrified reaction when he was told that Guy was in the room. Priceless image, and I wish I'd had my camera with me...
I'm sad to say that in one of the parties at this year's WHC there was a bit of Guy-bashing going on - very ill-informed and ignorant comments made by (English) people who'd only read one Crabs book and nothing else. I offered to give them a list of GNS titles that would change their minds about Guy's writing.
Someone remarked about the Gaiman incident and said 'fair play to Neil, he recovered well from it.'
To which I replied 'No he didn't. He looked like he wanted the ground to swallow him up.'
That was met with an awkward silence.
Guy seems to take all the digs and potshots in his stride, but does he not feel tempted to hit back at times? There was some dreadful writing in the 70s and 80s by other writers, and yet it's always Guy that comes under attack.
Funkdooby wrote an excellent article about this is one of the older GRs - 20 or 21, I believe, and it's well worth reading.
But I'd like to know what Guy feels about this unfair judgement on his work.
