but I know I should have.....
I thought this might be fun. Or not. Whatever.
Anyway, how about having a chat about things you've not read, but you know you probably should?
I'll start. And if I get banned for writing this or something, and/or lose all credibility, may you all be stricken by Rat bites in your beds!
Alright, here goes.... it's a biggie....
I've never read Lovecraft, and I know I should.
I skimmed one of his short story collections recently, but it did nothing for me. I'm a big fan of Poe, so it's not the antique nature of things, it's just something I've missed reading. And in missing reading it, I've almost grown to accept the absurd notion that I don't want to read it. Makes no sense. I know.
Anyway - any of you out there? It can be an author, or a title. For instance, surely we've all read The Exorcist, or Jaws, right?

There ya go!
And you know what, I have no intention right now of reading any! ;D
Fact is, I'm not a big "And a giant monster jumped out!" kind of guy.... I like something I can relate to in a story, and the whole monster thing is tired.
But I don't know enough about Lovecraft to really talk about him specifically.

Lovecraft isn't all about big slimey monsters from the sea or age old gods lurking in the shadows. The man has done a whole wealth of eerie tales to keep you awake at night.
You really should read some of his work squire. Honestly, I bet you find that you really enjoy it.

a great example of Lovecraft fiction with no slimy monsters would be 'The Case of Charles Dexter Ward' only really mentions slimy monsters in passing, at least from what i can remember.

I probably would enjoy some of them, and without a doubt I'll read him one day. Just not any day soon. He's simply not someone who I've found very "attractive". Hence I've not read him yet.
So much to read - you know?

I've never read any...
Brian Lumley
Shoud I? I'm not into all that gothic vampire malarky. Poppy Z Brite and Anne Rice can go jump as far as I'm concerned.
Am I missing out on anything by having missed Lumley? If I am...recommend me a good starting book.

Well I would recommend Lumley's Necroscope to you sire. A different take on the vampire mythos.
I f*cking hate vampires. As a monster, they are about as scary as a packet of cheese and onion crisps. With their dark eyes, rugged good looks and pointy teeth and little girls swooning before being drained of blood. Oh Christ just put this shit in the childrens fiction next to Cinderella and have done with it.
Then I read Necroscope and all the books after (13 I think) Lumley re-wrote the myth of the vampire and I must say, a jolly good job he did of it too.

Twilights a big one that everyone I know has been reading. Dreamcatcher is another I passed it once or twice for book club.

Wow, thanks for that, Amie. I have not heard of either of those.
I take it from your Welcome message and this that you're into more modern horror?
I'm mired in anything from the beginning of time to around 1990..........
