Horror for the Holidays
Celebrating the holidays with the Cthulhu Mythos
Edited by Scott David Aniolowski
Author and editor Scott David Aniolowski is now accepting submissions for Horror for the Holidays, an anthology of holiday-theme Cthulhu Mythos tales to be published in late 2011 by Miskatonic River Press. Dark poetry and fiction up to 10,000 words will be considered. The theme of this anthology is holidays: some holiday must be integral to your piece, and not just used as the backdrop. The traditions, rituals and lore of the holiday must be a driving force in your work, as well as the Lovecraftian elements. (Editor’s tip: I am not a fan of slavishly regurgitated pastiche filled with lists of books and names of icky monsters! Be fresh and original.)
Any holiday is fair game, although it suggested that those familiar in North America, Europe and Australia probably are the best to use (it is doubtful that many of our readers will recognize a Ugandan holiday, for instance!). Some suggested holidays include, but are not limited to: Bonfire Night/Guy Fawkes Night, Boxing Day, Chinese New Year, Christmas/Christmas Eve, Day of the Dead, Easter, Halloween/Samhain, Hanukkah, Mother’s Day/Father’s Day, New Years/New Years Eve, Saint Patrick’s Day, Thanksgiving, Valentine’s Day, Yule, etc. There are any number of other possibilities. (Editor’s tip: Halloween and Christmas will likely be the two most popular choices, so be creative with your selection.)
Submissions may be made either through e-mail or snail mail, however, upon acceptance an electronic version in doc. or rtf. format must be submitted (include an e-mail address of SASE for a reply to snail mail). Multiple submissions are acceptable (up to three short stories at once). Reprints will be considered only if they have previously appeared in very limited run publications (indicate previous publication along with date and approximate circulation). Payment is from 1½ cents a word up, depending upon publication history and merit. Publication will be in trade paperback format with an estimated release of October to December of 2011. Deadline for submissions is July 1, 2011. (Editor’s tip: if you send me something sloppy, strangely formatted, or hard to read I will not look at it. All submissions should be in standard, professional format.)
