Yes, interesting. But this illustrates two things that rule the self-pub debate. Firstly, you're going to have more success if you're already a published author with a following. The fact that SN re-released his first published book to begin with showed that that was a mark of quality, and I don't know if would-be readers who'd never heard of him before would have bothered if Red Church hadn't already been published. Secondly, digital. Kindle sales seem to be the benchmark of self-publishing success (certainly in the digital world) and there are many success stories. But here in the UK, where E-readers haven't really caught on yet, it's difficult to know if we can apply the same criteria. We still judge self-publishing success (rightly or wrongly) on the sale of print books. When the ridiculous price of E-readers comes down in this country, then we may find our market more closely resembling the American one.
