Greetings, Dark Fictioneers. Here's another one for you: "If you like to write horror stories then here's your chance to enter Dark Moon Book's newest short story contest and possibily get your short story published in our second anthology: Dark Moon Anthologies Presents: MONSTERS! Dark Moon Books (an imprint of Stony Meadow Publishing) is sponsoring is now announcing it is accepting entries to this contest. The contest is open to all writers, whether published or unpublished, and we are looking forward to reading some great short stories! RULE #1: (And this is perhaps the most important rule) Your short story must be a horror story! (That doesn't mean it can't be humorous. We love a good twist in our horror stories!) RULE #2: Your story must be about a specific monster. You can use any of the established type monsters (i.e. vampires, zombies, werewolves, etc.), an esoteric monster you've found in your internet serches (i.e. balrogs, gwomels, krakens. etc.) or, even better -- come up with a new and improved monster of your own creation. (In fact, a special prize will be given for the creation of a new monster even if we don't publish your story in the anthology!) The story style does not matter. It can be a straight slasher type story (although we have to admit right up front, those are not our favorites) or a humorous short story. But most importantly, it must be an entertaining horror short story. We must want to turn that next page to say what happens next in the story and how things end." And another one - a non-writing one this time, from the wonderful DF Underground: "We want to see your basement. Actually, we want to know if there's a basement out there somewhere that's scarier than the one we came up with. Your mission, should you choose to accept it: Take a look at our video sample below. If you think your basement is scarier than this, go shoot a quick video of your own. Post your video to YouTube, then email your YouTube link to editor@df-underground.com. We'll compile video entries on the contest page here at theDF_underground, where all the voting action will take place. On May 15, we'll open the contest page for public voting-by-comment (your chance to tell everybody you know to come vote for you). On June 30, we'll tally the votes, and the video creator who earns the most votes will be the winner of theDF_underground's first DF_TV:underground_Television online video contest." Some bloke called Terry Pratchett (no, me neither) has announced this: THE TERRY PRATCHETT PRIZE Further Information Sir Terry Pratchett had this to say: Anywhere but here, anywhen but now. Which means we are after stories set on Earth, although it may be an Earth that might have been, or might yet be, one that has gone down a different leg of the famous trousers of time (see the illustration in almost every book about quantum theory). We will be looking for books set at any time, perhaps today, perhaps in the Rome of today but in a world where 2000 years ago the crowd shouted for Jesus Christ to be spared, or where in 1962, John F Kennedy's game of chicken with the Russians went horribly wrong. It might be one day in the life of an ordinary person. It could be a love story, an old story, a war story, a story set in a world where Leonardo da Vinci turned out to be a lot better at Aeronautics. But it won't be a story about being in an alternate Earth because the people in an alternate Earth don't know that they are; after all, you don't. But this might just be the start. The wonderful Peter Dickinson once wrote a book that could convince you that flying dragons might have existed on Earth. Perhaps in the seething mass of alternate worlds humanity didn't survive, or never evolved -- but other things did, and they would have seen the world in a different way. The possibilities are literally endless, but remember, it's all on Earth. Maybe the continents will be different and the climate unfamiliar, but the physics will be the same as ours. What goes up must come down, ants are ant-sized because if they were any bigger their legs wouldn't carry them. In short, the story must be theoretically possible on some version of the past, present or future of a planet Earth. The deadline for submissions is 31 December 2010 A shortlist of six entries will be announced by 31 March 2011. www.terrypratchett.co.uk/news/termsandconditions.html

Well, seeing as how I already have a 95,000-word novel floating around with agents who seem to be ignoring it (or replying to say they found it very amusing but it wasn't for them), I think I'll be entering this TP prize doodah.

Nice one, FLL! Now, I must apologise for the lack of entries for your chosen theme on the shorty story competition. It's a great theme, and people will be posting their tales soon. But...did you know, that the winner of the last competition is NOT exempt from posting a tale on the theme he/she has nominated? So...lead the way, good sir!

www.bridportprize.org.uk/index.htmWorth a go - even though it costs to enter, the prize money is very attractive. Not much in the way of horror/dark fiction so far...let's see if we can change that!
