Is there any part of the writing process you find difficult?
I couldn’t put it any better than Dean Koontz: “Writing a novel is like making love, but it's also like having a tooth pulled. Pleasure and pain. Sometimes it's like making love while having a tooth pulled.”
I often find it difficult to write. I strain to find the word I want, and sometimes it’s very frustrating. But then when it flows, it’s like something magical appearing on the page, and you think, “Did I just write that!”
How do you go about writing, do you have a plot rundown, character synopsis all developed first or do you go with the flow?
Although I didn’t used to, I now plan out my novels before I write them. It’s not written in stone, but it allows me to get a feel for the direction the story will take. As for characters, I sketch them out, trying to think what sort of foibles they will have, what they look like etc. I also like to give my main characters strange names, which some people don’t like, but I think that if I called my main character Simon, or John, people would likely not remember them. By giving them unusual names, I hope that makes them more memorable.

How do you feel about the collector markets. Is it fair play for authors to only release stories as expensive ultra limited editions, or should everyone get a chance to read it?

You don't have to answer this one if you don't want to.
Have you ever based a character who die a horrible death, or who is just a total jerk, on someone you really didn't like? if so did they ever figure it out?

What are you working on at the moment? I’m working on a sort of follow on novel to my latest novel, The Kult that features the main character, Prosper Snow. That’s all I can say at the moment, because if I say too much, it will take the magic out of it for me. Are your characters based on real people? Not usually, although if they’re based on anyone, I would say there’s a little of me in some of them – I just won’t say which bits.

How do you feel about the collector markets. Is it fair play for authors to only release stories as expensive ultra limited editions, or should everyone get a chance to read it? I’ve bought collectors editions of books myself, so I can’t really knock it. Personally, I only buy one if it’s something I really, really want, or by an author I really like. But I guess if they didn’t sell, publishers wouldn’t release them. Of course some go on to be published in the mass market, such as Joe Hill’s, Heart Shaped Box, but most probably don’t. Speaking from an authors perspective, if it was the only publishing deal I could get, then sure I would accept - some limited editions are works of art. Is it fair? Well I don't think it's a question of being fair. Some books are more suited to limited editions because they don't have mass appeal. Are there any authors out there you would love to collaborate with? I think it would be more a case of are there any authors who would collaborate with me! It’s not something I’d be averse to doing, but I find it hard enough to write my own stuff without working with someone else and arguing over why I killed a character off etc. Have you ever based a character who die a horrible death, or who is just a total jerk, on someone you really didn't like? if so did they ever figure it out? I have, and they haven’t, probably because they wouldn’t have read my work, much like most of the population

If you could go back in time which classic novel would you have loved to have written?

If you could go back in time which classic novel would you have loved to have written? Jim asked a similar question, but if I had to choose another novel, I think I would go for Frankenstein. It’s a classic based on Mary Shelley’s dream – and what a dream that must have been. The ‘monster’ is not really described, and neither is the mechanics of his creation, which is left more to the readers imagination, but the story raises ethical questions concerning scientific discovery and creation. And unlike the films, the monster is not a lumbering, stupid brute, but an agile, resourceful and calculating creature.
