I doubt I'd pay that much for a book.

Ah, The Badlands. Almost as overpriced as Koontz&Co. One of them was flogging Night of the Werewolf for over a grand.
Y'know, I think I saw one of them at a GNS convention a few Septembers back, getting Guy to sign a box load of books.
"No, these arn't for eBay, Guy. They're for my own collection." Hmm.

Pisses me right off when I see shit like this. For f*ck's sake, a book is meant to be pissing read, it's isn't a bloody commodity.

It's also taking the piss. Getting Guy to put his signature on it to make it worth more - I remember at that time there was another convention regular who saw this going on and he was furious about it.

Too bloody right, it's an insult to the author, it's more than an insult, it's exploiting them. Hell it's hard enough making a living by writing without having some bloody leech trying to make a fast buck.

Writers struggle and strive to make a name for themselves, a process that can take years, or even decades...and then opportunists get in on the act, auctioning the author's rare first editions on eBay, or elsewhere, for an insane profit - one that only benefits them, while the original author gets nothing! How can that be fair??

Steppedonwolf - again, agreed. We really can't blame GNS (or any other established author in this genre) for being sceptical about those who want signed editions. If I was that well respected, I'd have the same attitude. I've seen this sort of thing going on at conventions (the GNS ones, and others), and you very quickly learn to spot the mercenary autograph hunters. I've always tried to disassociate myself from them, but I hate the idea of genuine fans being tarred with the same brush as the opportunists. Always a tough call for the authors to make, though. After all, how can they tell the difference?

Appendix - some of the old pulp novels (from the 1950s / 60s) get auctioned on eBay for unbelievably stupid prices. I remember seeing a cult title, 'Satan was a Lesbian,' by Fred Haley (publ. 1966 or '67, I think) being auctioned on eBay a while back - asking price, £850!
Someone posted a question, suggesting that the price might be a little 'ambitious,' and asking if the seller could lower it to a more viable level. The seller replied simply, 'No thanks.'
What is wrong with people??!
Sorry for the rant, people, but I hate to see this sort of thing going on.
