I need to get my book buying under control, having a credit card, a debit card and pay - pal means i have the ability to buy more books than a proverbial horse can shite. I pre-ordered Scratch by Brian Keene, without even looking at the details, thinking it was a no brainer $35 would still bring in a really good read.
So what did I get for my $35 ( closer to $60 buy the time they included international shipping. I got a limited hardback short story that runs to 75 pages, including illustrations. The book is in, to me any ways, an odd dimension, more akin to a takeaway menu. Even though it was 75 pages the book just lasted the bus journey home from work, around 20 minutes.
I can hear peoples teeth grinding and pitch forks getting sharpened," it's quality over quantity that counts". I can agree with that to some degree, but not when the quantity equates to $180 an hour, even with free shipping that's $100 an hour. If horror authors want to survive they have to look at value for money. I can't justify spending tat amount of money on any book these days regardless of length or quality. It's why I haven't ordered Bad Magik By Steven Shrewsbury, even though I know it's going to be a really good read I can't justify the $90 it will cost me to get my hands on it.
You'll notice I've not really reviewed the writing in the book, that's because it's at best a decent story, I just cannot separate the story from the cost the book, perhaps if it was a beautiful looking book, I could cut the story some slack. However, this book has been cursed with some of the worst cover art I have seen.
