I have just finished writing a collection of my own short horror stories called SHOCKERS, and am contemplating self publishing it on either Lulu or Createspace. What do YOU all think? Would you recommend self publishing as the best route to go down? Would LOVE to find a commercial publisher for my book, but have been disheartened by claims that they are very averse to new authors with short story collections. Mersey www.horrorwriters.net

Hmmmm...interesting question squire. I'm not an author by any stretch of the imagination, so I'm not actually going to be of much help to you whatsoever. I've purchased bits 'n' bobs from POD publishers (i.e. Lulu etc) but have always thought that the costs were too high - so as a general rule I've avoided them.
My advise would be to follow the David Moody example, and get that bad-boy of a collection online availiable as a free download. Yeah - you'll not make a sausage from it, BUT it'll help you to get your name out there (more people are likely to read your work if its free) and the 'download-count' will help you with trying to secure a publisher for any future work.
David Moody did this with his early novel 'Autumn' and now he's doing very well.
Well...that's my two-pence worth anyway. Just a suggestion.

First, I did it and my answer is - depends on a few things and I lean toward no: 1. Do you have lots of hours to promote it? 2. Can you handle being called names by other writers and having book store managers compare your work to "real books"? 3. Do you want to spend more money than you make? I was fortunate. I got my self-published (great story/crap writing) into the hands of a publisher. I also spent 10 hours a day bugging the hell out of people. My advice: Put it aside for six months and write something else. Go back and read it again - aloud if possible (on the patio with coffee/wine/beer/whatever). Edit again and send it off to pubs. Don't rush it. Got to go make the world a better place.
