Here is a question about a horror writer that I've been trying to find an answer to for years. About ten years ago I read a short story by a female writer in a collection of British horror stories. It was one of the best horror stories I ever read, and regret that I cannot remember her name. She used all three of her names (including middle name) on the title of her works, and she wrote in the 40s or 50s. I think she mostly wrote novels about family life that had nothing to do with horror, and at least one of one her novels was still in print ten years ago. I seem to remember that she was the wife of a famous author, but I have no idea who it is. The basic idea of the story was that an English girl went to a boarding school in France. During the Christmas break her parents couldn't pick her up, so she was one of the few people remaining at the school. There she came upon a ghost of a girl who had apparently committed suicide because of cruel teasing by one of the teachers. I'd really appreciate it if anyone could come up with an answer! My email is borapat@yahoo.com Peter

Hmm. Can you remember what the name of the anthology was, or which publishing house it came from? Or the names of any other contributors? The story doesn't sound familiar, I must admit - any ideas if she had other horror stories in any other anthos? Welcome to BHN, by the way. Don't log in as a guest, join us! We won't bite...much

You're right. I will register. I don't mind bites if they are not overly painful. I don't remember the anthology at all. It was a paperback of horror stories that has probably fallen to pieces by now. I once went back to the library to try to find it and it had mysteriously vanished. The problem is it may well be the only horror story she wrote, and she just happened to be good at it. I should have bought the book she wrote that I saw, but at the time it just seemed far too depressing to spend money on a book about romance and happy family life....

Hi Peter (Have you joined yet?) Have you gone through the Pan horror anthologies? They were one of the most popular paperback horror collections around. Just google the name, I'm sure someone will have inventoried the authors.
