Last night I did a double bill of a couple of strange titles.
I opened with Genuine (1920) a silent film of which only 44 minutes remain. It was Directed by Robert Wiene who gave us the seminal The Cabinet of D. Caligari.
It's a "vampire" tale, but doesn't take on the traditional view we all know today. In this one there are no fangs, and no bloodlust. Instead we have a strange woman, wearing an extraordinary leather outfit, who makes men fall in love with her - then she demands that to prove their love, they kill themselves! Good stuff.
I followed it up with some bizarre exploitation fare. Pickup.
I can't even find this one on IMDB, and that says something!
Odd little film, and since no-one here will come across - and even if they do, won't want to WATCH it - I'll give you the plot:
Man has job to deliver a bus to Louisiana from Florida. On the way he meets two female hitchhikers. They're all hippy types. They take a detour through a swamp and get stuck.
The man has sex with one girl. He has sex with the other girl (this ISN'T a hardcore film, by the way). A clown turns up and gives away balloons. The wife of Apollo (the God) turns up and tells one of the girls she's her replacement. A senator canvassing for votes turns up. The man has sex with one girl. The man has sex with the other girl (again). While he's having sex with the second girl (again) some hoodlums turn up and rape the first girl. The dump her body in the swamp. The couple find the body. A plane turns up to rescue them.
The End.
Yes, it's that strange.
Loved it. ;D

Always fun to watch Bruce Willis!
Last night I watched a few more films:
The Teacher. This is SUPPOSED to be an old exploitation film, but instead it plays like a LONG episode of Starsky and Hutch, with a few breast shots thrown in to up the rating. Awful. I'm actually not sure how I got to the end of it - it ran for just over 90 minutes, and each minute stretched into what felt like an hour.
The Chaos Experiment. Firstly I'd have to say, Val Kilmer is looking old, and he's put on some weight. How very un-hollywood. ;D Secondly I'd say this one wasn't too bad. Not great mind you, but at least I didn't want to throw things at the screen while watching it. Truth be told, Kilmer's performance was pretty top notch, but the plot here isn't exactly great. As a distraction not bad, but don't rush out to see it.

Kolchak: The Night Stalker
Early '70s nostalgia at its very best. Hadn't seen it for years and watched with a smile on my face throughout. The Night Strangler is up for tonight.

Kolchak: The Night Stalker Early '70s nostalgia at its very best. Hadn't seen it for years and watched with a smile on my face throughout. The Night Strangler is up for tonight. I'll bet this wasn't on a channel I can get. But if it was, I'd be down anyway because I'd missed it. Sometimes I wonder why I find it so difficult to like many contemporary films. They're often clever and the acting's as good as ever it was. I suppose the reason is, I just wouldn't be interested in chatting with most of the actors. Age prejudice, probably. Haven't watched TV in three weeks, and the first film that I can think of offhand that I find genuinely likable is Michael Powell's The Phantom Light (1935). Skullduggery and dark deeds in a lighthouse off the Welsh coast, including a creepy title sequence (a promise which the film never really keeps) and intro shots of the new lighthouse keeper arriving at a tiny railway station in the hills. Smugglers and a girl with legs that go on forever. Love it. Above image from the title sequence (Hope that makes a change from the effing spammer)

ZOMBIELAND
Why bother with a plot if you have lots of zombies and blood?
I'm a horror film buff, and truly love the genre, but this is a real downer. They literally did away with a plot almost entirely. They left us with some bare bones (sic) of a boy-meets-girl. Boys-loses-girl. Boy-finds-girl. But that's it.
Woody Harrison plays the only role he can these days, a gun-toting nobody, and Bill Murray gives us a wholly rubbish cameo.
The only saving grace was some clever integration of video game stylizations. But that's hardly enough to make this one worthy our time.
Not worthy on any level, imo. Rubbish.

Tis fair enough. I felt there was no point to the entire thing. Lots of posturing and bravado, with all the vapid argument of a pre-teen. The story is told from the point of view of the least interesting character, who finds himself in the most improbable romance at the most horrible of times. Erm..... I guess put me down as a "I don't get it".

It's Complicated..not a top pick..but it was worth the watch, some funny scenes in it.
As for Zombieland..its one of those movies you love or hate. Personally I liked it...it was funny, and I thought the writing was clever for a horror movie. It didnt even try to take itself seriously and Bill Murray had a great cameo..
