Sorry dude! My annual birthday visit is a must I'm afraid!!! I hope you get loads of bargains. It used to be an annual pilgrimage for me as well before we left. That Murder and Mayhem shop has a lot of my money :-)

So, back from Hay-on-Wye. Another cracking day!!! It really is a book enthusiasts dream come true there. Anyway, got myself another big bundle of horror goodies: Daoma Winston - The Devil's Daughter (1971) - Looks like some cheesy horror fun. Phil Smith - The Resurrection Machine (1978) - Been after this bad-boy for a while now! Phil Smith - The Saxonbury Printout (1979) - Again, been looking out for this litte beauty too... Robert Lory - Horrorscope# 2 The Revenge Of Taurus (1974) Great cover...great tag line...great book? Edward Jarvis - Pestilence (1983) - "Don't go near the water!" F**k yeah!!!! Michael McDowell - Blackwater-2: The Levee (1983) - I'm trying to get them all since I picked up #1 Michael McDowell - Blackwater-6: Rain (1986) - See above!!! Kenneth Rayner Johnson - The Homunculus (1982) - Couldn't refuse a title like that now could I? Jory Sherman - Chill (1978) - I just liked the demonic face on the cover! Richard Harrington - Hellfire Today (1971) - A topless nun holdig a whip on the cover...a must have! Ronald Chetwynd-Hayes - The Awakening (1980) - I've gotten into reading film novelisation recently for some reason... Constance Rauch - The Landlady (1975) - Snazzy cover that opens out to show a naked & abused doll. Well worth £1.50! Jospeh L. Gilmore - Rattlers (1979) - Another 'Creatures vs Mankind' novel for my collection. Jo Gannon - Plasmid (1980) - Another novelisation. After this since it was featured in Paperback Fanatic. [Ed] Christine Bernard - 1st Armada Ghost Book (1967) - Another early(ish) anthology for my collection Peter Straub - Ghost Story (1979) - One of his I didn't own. I do now! Dennis Wheatley - The Ka Of Gifford Hillary (1956) - Can't resist a bit of our Dennis!!!

Nice.
I've read a lot of what you got (and one of the prides of my bookshelves is a signed 1st edition hardback of Straub's Ghost Story) but the "Blackwaters" make me jealous. I read those when they came out, sold the books and have never seen a copy again.

The Awakening is great - far better than the film, and a masterclass in how to write a novelisation. Saxonbury Printout...I'll be interested to hear you opinion on this, especially the ending. Plasmid - never read it, but that cover is very striking, and I remember seeing it in countless bookstores when I were a lad. Looks great. Review, please! And the First Armada Ghost Book...happy days and great memories.

Well done DLS. Now, here's a question for you sir. Are you ready?
How many did you leave in the shops?
I know you have a full library in your house, in your loft and scattered around your rooms BUT you say that you were RE-STARTING your horror collection AND you had unlimited funds...
How many would you have left in Hay-on-Wye?

Willie - Yeah, I picked up the first 'Blackwaters' book a year or two ago and since I've kept an eye out for the others. A further 2 in just one day was a real find!!!
Ade - Saxonbury Printout wise...I'll let you know what I think (via a review no doubt) in due course. I've only read 'The Incredible Melting Man' by Phil Smith - but I've heard these other two novels are quite entertaining. I'm itching to read them now...
Ian - Are you asking me how much other horror stuff was at Hay-on-Wye? If so, then the answer is shit loads! I could easily have spent thousands of pounds there. Sooooo many books I had to put back. And yeah, I already have thousands of books in my collection, so the fact that there were so many horror books I still wanted, shows how much there is there.
However, one of the best secondhand bookshops that was in Hay-on-Wye has closed down now. Last year I bought loads from this particular shop, which had a basemet crammed full of paperbacks, many of which were horror ones. Alas, it's now a clothes shop. I was close to tears...
If anyone on this forum hasn't been to the book capital of the UK (Hay-on-Wye), then I strongly recommend that you make the effort to go. It really is amazing. They also have a book festival each year...which has even more books for sale. There's barely enough hours in the day to go to all 31 bookshops as it is...let alone with countless stalls thrown. Madness!

Madness! It's on my places-to-go list. But I'm terrified to think not just how much money I'll spend there, but how many hours will be sucked out of my existence. I'll get a phone call from the guv'nors asking where I am. To which I'll reply 'Sorry, slept in. Back soon.' 'No, where have you been for the last four years?' It's going to take one hell of a doctor's note to cover that one...

Is that the one on the corner, across the road from Booth's? Or even Booth's itself?

Is that the one on the corner, across the road from Booth's? Or even Booth's itself? The one on the corner, opposite Richard Booth's Bookshop. When you went in, there was a flight of stairs in front of you, that led down into the basemant of wonders. Even on the way down the stairs there were countless horror paperbacks from the 60's, 70's & 80's, all crammed into shelving down the stairway. I was really looking forward to this going to this shop again. Alas, it is no more...

Nooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!! One of my favourites. Afraid so squire. At least all the other good bookshops are still there. Hay Cinema Bookshop is still as impressive as ever. Over 200,000 secondhand books. It's just incredible. A few of the books I purchased that day were from their horror section. Greenways Corner Bookshop is still one of my favs though. Impressive horror section for the size of the shop, with tonnes of obscure titles (i.e. not just King, Koontz, Hutson, Herbert and the like). That's where I got my two Phil Smith novels from. Started the day off well...

Arse! Just forked out a small fortune on our car.
MOT + Service (inc all the fixes required to pass the MOT) = £170 New front wheel (old one failed in the MOT) = £75 1 year road tax = £180 TOTAL spent over the last 3 days on the car = £425
Bugger!!!! I'm skint now!
Big Issue anyone?

I'm skint now! Big Issue anyone? The joys of driving Renaults, I'm afraid. Last March the gearbox on my Renault 19 packed in - I was lucky to get a second hand one on eBay for £80, but fitting it still cost the Earth... But it's running great now...
