Well, I should've guessed it. When an editor receives your revised MS and says 'very nicely done...expect good news when I've 'cleansed' my slushpile', it's tempting fate. One of the anthos I really wanted to get into this year. Still, a nice rejection letter after getting into the second round for Permuted Press Times of Trouble. "Adrian, Did I say to expect good news? Oh, my. In all honesty, on receiving your revision, I fully expected to accept this story. But by the time I had completed reviewing all the submissions for the anthology, I just had too many good pieces and not enough places to put them. I deeply regret leaving you dangling like this for such a long time. It's unconscionable, and you have my abject apology (for whatever that might be worth). Respectfully declined, but I wish do you success in the future. Lane Adamson, editor Times of Trouble." Ever so slightly gutted.

Sorry for you man. I was pretty damn excited for you about this too. Well...I guess there's no harm in sending me your submission for my own enjoyment now then....

Sorry to hear that, Ade. I notice a few others have managed to get into Spinetinglers to vote. You may want to remind your fans...

WARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRPIGSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ah, thank 'ee kindly sir! SUNRISE AT THE PORTARA is winging its way to you now. Now, other news...well, a nice piss-up at the BFS open night in Truckles Wine Bar, Bloomsbury on Friday. Marred only by the fact that the pub kicked us all out at 10pm - yes, 10pm on a f*cking FRIDAY! Met Dean Drinkel, one of the MAB contributors and we signed books for Barbie Widle. Yes, the female Cenobite from Hellraiser II - pics are available on the Friendface site, and when I get round to updating my website I'll put them up there also. Dean also donated a copy to the raffle and it was won by Stephen Jones, who lost his rag at me at the end of the evening. Probably a joke I made came out the wrong way. I think. A fun shoot in Hampshire with Standford Archers on the Sunday, with plenty of ice and snow. A crap score, but considering I haven't shot much this year I didn't do too badly. Writing wise - short story ideas for Peter Mark May's antho and a few others are bubbling away, but they're on the back burner for now; it's back to the novel. Fairlight has been left alone for too long, and its light will be fading if I'm not careful...

2010 has been one hell of a year.
March saw me involved with the DF Underground, which led on to forming Dark Continents in early autumn. I've attended three conventions (GNS, World Horror and FantasyCon) and have started to make new friends and contacts within the spec-fic world.
The MAB project has been a joy to work on. The book has been well received and is getting the names of some rising stars in dark fiction good exposure - in particular, Dean Drinkel and Bec Zugor. It's been great to meet up with them all in person.
2010 has been a breakthrough year for me in terms of publishing. Daughters of the Night was my first anthology acceptance for HorrorBound's Fear of the Dark, and Winter Sun was my third (for Tasmaniac's Festive Fear 2). To find out Paul Kane was in both of them was a real boost for me, and it was great to meet him at FantasyCon. I did a review of his excellent Arrowland trilogy for the Harlequin Bowmen ezine and put in a sample chapter, which went down well.
Wonder & Glory has been accepted for Static Press' Monk Punk where I'll be sharing page space with oor Wullie for the first time. Hopefully not the last.
The Bodymen finally found a home with The Spectrum Collection, our second release which is garnering some positive reviews.
My only disappointment on the writing side was Permuted Press' Times of Trouble anthology, which I mentioned earlier in the year. Still, it's a good tale that the editor liked, it doesn't need any reworking so I'm hoping to find a home for it somewhere.
Work on The Caretakers has been a revelation. Getting an outside editor involved and having the feedback 'it's been an absolute delight to work on. At times I found myself reading rather than editing, being so caught up in the story' is a real confidence booster.
Jethro Lentle has been working on the artwork, is putting the final tweaks on it and I'm dying to show it to you all. He's also doing the cover for DM Youngquist's Snareville. Remember the name Jethro Lentle - he's going to be big one day.
I'm aiming to get the first draft of Fairlight done by Easter. It's now come free from the sticky points and is back to full flow. After that, 2011 is going to be a year of collaborations.
First up is OAZ: Old Age Zombie, a comedy-horror collection of shorts myself and Suzanne Robb are working on, which we'll release as an eBook at some stage. Then I'll be co-writing the third volume of the Snareville trilogy with DM Youngquist; I'll be writing the British side of the zombie apocalypse and it's going to be interesting to see how the two nationalities differ in their approach. Because in my section, guns are very, very limited. Plenty of bows and arrows, though...
And, of course I've been saving hard for WHC 2011, for Dark Continents Publishing's launch at Texas - where I'll be meeting all the good folk in the flesh (so to speak) for the first time.

Good job on the Lovecraft ezine sale too Ade. And it looks great.
Good company too for you, with Simon Kurt Unsworth and Willum Pugmire.
(I've got another coming in issue 3 too -- looks like a nice new market.)

And of course, it was first seen here on the BHN shorty story competition! ;D I'm thrilled with it - Mike told me it was going in a future issue but he wasn't sure which one...didn't realise it would be in this soon! I love the artwork he uses as well. Shaping up to be a pretty good market. What tale have you got in #3, Willie?

One called "ASK THE COSMOS" -- a dinner party goes badly wrong when a cynic asks a psychic for some real proof...
