that's awesome, well done you!! the Permuted anthologies are always brilliant, just getting through to the next round is fab news. I'll keep all my fingers and toes crossed for you. (i subbed for the same antho but haven't heard anything back yet... ) Thank you so much, Rakie. I've heard that Lane is reading all the submissions in order of receipt, so if you subbed yours recently I'm sure you'll get a reply soon. Best of British (Horror Novels) luck to you, m'dear! What's your tale about? Care to shed some info?

I just heard from an antho (not Permuted) who said they'd get back to me soon... after they've read the other 420 submissions they received! And that's just a small antho, not publicised much, and not one of the big paying ones. I can't imagine how many entries some of the more noticeable ones get... Yep, this is the problem now. As so many houses are closed to submissions, the other markets (semi-pro and token - hell, even non-paying) are being flooded. Interesting discussion on this on Merchant's Keep forum: Jerrod Balzer said: 'Well, once the economy went to shit, so did sales. When the news has stories of the big houses suffering, you know the smaller ones are struggling for sure. A lot of places cut down on how many projects they took on, while other places folded. This means more authors not finding home for their work, so the slush piles for those houses who are open get enormous. Eventually, they had to stop taking them or they'd be putting more time into reading submissions than working on the projects they already have.' www.merchantskeep.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=499What's the name of the antho you submitted to, Willie? I agree entirely with Jerrod on that one. Wise Bigfoot is wise. The one I subbed to was "Call of Lovecraft" site.papercutbooks.com/Announcements.htmlAlready in that I know of are I -so- want to be in an antho with Lovecraft. (and RC)

Yep, i believe he's being very methodical about it but he's also had an awful run of bad luck recently. the glib answer is mine's about 1000 words too long. I had some serious editing issues, how embarrasing. Being less glib, it's about a time travel who grants wishes... kind of. I'm still not sure it's a very good story, but it was as good as it was going to get so i sent it anyway. ;D how about you? what's yours about?

Yes, I've heard he's lost someone in the family, hasn't he? Poor man. A wish-granting time-traveller, eh? I like the sound of that. And as the emphasis is on the dark side of time travel, I bet they're the sort of wishes that shouldn't be granted...lovely stuff, look forward to reading it. Mine's about a ruined temple on the Greek island of Naxos that acts as a time portal at a certain time of the year. A woman goes through to rescue her boyfriend who disappeared through it previously - and changes history in a way she wouldn't have thought possible.

The comments on that thread are hilarious, arn't they? Actually, I don't think it's a bad idea to ask for subs in handwritten format - just as the Old Masters had to do back in days of yore. It's an interesting idea... ...but no sci-fi? Well, it's easy to forget that Wells wrote social comedies and polemics. But the thought of handwriting a Kipps or Mr Polly pastiche in my own appallingly unreadable handwriting isn't a challenge I could rise to! ;D

An interesting week on the rejections front. I got one for Spirit of Summer which I'd sent to Dark Recesses back in...well, so long ago I'd forgotten all about it. Two for The Caretakers - one from Snowbooks (form) and one from Canadian publishers Absolute X-Press. (Personalised.) There were some good points made with the latter, which I've taken on board and will use when I go over the manuscript later. But some points I found really bizarre. Especially this one: "Lastly, the writer really enjoys hinting at something being a “deep dark secret” and then continually teasing the reader by not explaining it. This happens so often and with so many things that as a reader I felt so excluded from the events in the story. Despite the lovely writing, I was not compelled to stay involved in the story." Odd, because the 'secret' is fully explained in the second third of the book, and there were plenty of clues given out...I wonder just how far into the manuscript the reader went? Maria Graza has said on her Facebook page "Several award-winning authors will be featured in HorrorBound's second anthology "Fear of the Dark", stay tuned for more details..." As I'm in this one I'm dying to know what the TOC is! More news when I get it. And my third contribution to Underground Rising is up now for reading. A new character is introduced, and pieces of the puzzle are falling together at last... www.df-underground.com/underground-rising/underground-rising-scene-17.htmlI asked Serenity to put up a pic of me grinning like a loon in sunny Ibiza next to the updated bio. Just thought it'd be amusing to have a cheesey snap rather than a standard 'dark, moody and disturbed horror writer' picture. ;D

Booked my air tickets and accomodation for WHC Texas next year. My little sister wanted to come; as Joe Hill's there she's hoping his old man will make an appearance... All the operators that offered accomodation at the Doubletree hotel (where the convo is being held) wanted the FULL cost up front. No way could I afford that, so we're staying at the Radisson instead. About ten miles from the convo, but right in the heart of Austin. So a few bus tickets for the four-day event won't be a real problem, and it gives us a good base to explore Austin for the remainder of the two weeks that we're there. I have another reason for attending WHC. I can't go into too many details at the moment, but let's just say that it's going to be a significant career move...

Really wish I could be there but I just can't afford it.
World Fantasy is going to be in Toronto in 2012... I'm going to make a big effort to get to that one.

Alas, The Bodymen will no longer be appearing in J S Chancellor's Welcome To The Asylum.
The project has been pulled because of various other committments the lady is involved in.
Shame, really. This would have been in with Mark West and Simon Marshall-Jones, who had supplied excellent artwork for the mag.
So, I've sent it to Cutting Block press for their Tattered Souls antho. Not sure about my chances with this one, but worth a crack.
At the risk of being big headed, it's a personal favourite of mine. I think it's a good story, and everyone who's read it has had nothing but positive feedback for it.
I've had three acceptances for it - Ghostwriter Publications, Encounters and The Asylum - as well as a short-listing from Comet Press for their Extreme Creatures antho - so I'd like to think there's life in these undead dogs yet!
Wish it Godspeed, chaps and chapesses.

Indeed - good luck my good man.
Feel free to blast 'The Bodymen' in my general direction if you fancy it.
