So, DLS - have you written to Santa yet? Santa is hopefully aware of my hopes. I have purposefully left this particular thread up on the computer screen when leaving it on for 'the next user' hehehehehe. I've also dropped numerous hints such as "ohhhhh imagine how great life would be with a Kindle"...and "I bet people have to order Kindle readers early to avoid disappointment from them selling out in the run up to Christmas". But just to make doubly sure, I'm going to drop some even bigger hints over October & November. Forget being subtle...it's time to bring out the big guns! Here's hoping!

Hi folks, To Kindle - That is my answer ... Got my Kindle last Friday having ordered it from Amazon a month ago. I am extremely impressed with it. I have played with an iPad and although it is a great device, it is around 4 times the price of a Kindle, 3 times the weight and considerably shorter battery life (hours vs weeks on Kindle). Once you've got past the cover you don't miss the fact that the Kindle is only black and white. Clarity of my photo does not really do justice to how good the display is and how crisp text renders. Getting books onto the device is a breeze. Books from amazon are sent using their Whispernet service which send books straight to device in seconds. MOBI formatted books can be simply dragged and dropped into the "documents" folder of the device when connected via the USB cable. EPub formatted books can be converted to MOBI format and sent to device in about 30 seconds using Calibre software (a free download). PDFs, Word documents and a variety of other formats can be emailed straight to your Kindle's email address. I will post a more detailed review (along with some more screenshots) on the GNS site soon. Regards, Phil Ellett Webmaster and EBook Publisher for GNS.

here is a good reason to get one only $4.99, it would have cost near $100 to get a copy of this in the UK

I just had a play on a Kindle. I didn't realise that they were so small, thin and light! And the screen is really weird. I thought it was going to be like a laptop screen (i.e. backlit etc), but it's a really clear and easy to read matt screen which is very easy on the eyes.
The menu screen is a bit basic, but does the job.
All in all, I'm somewhat impressed with it.

I received my Kindle a few days ago and I must admit that, I do like it. For some reason, it reminds me of an old etchasketch! One thing that does concern me is, just how durable is it? I'm not talking about dropping it in the bath whilst reading (That would f*ck up a paperback too!) I mean what if it just slipped off the table.

Interesting point - I haven't heard anything about the fragility or toughness of these devices.
I guess buying the protective leather cover will help to limit any damage, but they're bloody expensive.

Sue made me a nice padded cover for the Kobo in an afternoon.
So there's your answer. Get a handy woman :-)
