Beng a horror author, do your family and friends ever wonder about you? What has their reaction been after reading your work?

As a writer of horror fiction, do you believe in he things that go bump in the night Indeed I do. I always try and rationalise things, and look for the most probable and realistic explanation. However, somethings can't be easily explained. For example, the house here (Manji Towers as I affectionally refer to it) has something wrong with it. We hear shuffling footsteps across the lounge room in the dead of night, and the kitchen door (that squeaks) opening. I've also seen photographs (and those really freak me out for some reason) that friend's have taken and captured something spooky on there. You know that there's been no trickery involved and some of them are just...creepy. The only thing I don't believe in is witchcraft, the teenage 'I can make it rain!' type. That just pisses me off!

WHAT TO YOU LIKE TO DO IN YOUR SPARE TIME? I have 2 stepkids so spare time is a commodity! Like most writers I'm an avid reader and always have to have a book on the go. I used to play in bass in a band for years, but that ship has sailed and all my equipment is still back in the UK. There's nothing better for me then to finish the writing/editing for the day, get the kids in bed and settle down with my partner and a coffee and watch some people get splattered across the screen. I've finally found someone into the same sick shit as me. Is it wrong to mix gore and snuggle time?

Beng a horror author, do your family and friends ever wonder about you? What has their reaction been after reading your work? My mum knows what I'm like, and she has read a few of my things. I can remember her mentioning the man getting a blow job while acid is poored on his chest. I could have died with embarrassment!). She doesnt like any of my stuff involving the supernatural, but that's just her. Her brother and sister, both devout Christians, didn't even read anything of mine, but heard a few things. They called me a heretic, and were apparently quite sincere in this. I've seen my aunty since, and she seemed fine with me.

What do you think needs to change before horror fiction is as popular as it was was before the late 90's? Good question! To be honest...I don't know. I think fiction in general took a dive in the late 90s. Its culture. The whole get famous quick ethos came in abundance during this time, what with Big Brother and Pop Idol, etc. Did anyone notice that the best sellers since this time are all TV chef cookery books and celebrity (or not) biographys? Can things change? Its been like this for a good few years now. I think the mainstream has become so shallow now that people fear liking something for the risk of being unpopular. Reading might be deemed bad enough, but to read horror? Its like Jim's question about how friends and family see you. Reading horror might become a dirty little secret, like porn. So, yes. I have no idea, but am open to suggestions!

Amazon reviews good or bad? I get the feeling that many of them are not exactly honest if you get what I mean.

Should an author write for himself or the fans? You hear so many stores of fans outrage when an author refuses to write another story based on one of there characters or set in one of their worlds.

Watching the news about the search for the last victim of the Moors Murders I was wondering, how far should horror distance itself from real events? Would you for instance set a story based around the Saddleworth Moor area?
