I'm serious, but before anything else happens. I think it would be a good idea to actually ask someone who has experience in this sort of project.

Sounds like the chap to ask is Garry Charles - he runs Hades' Gate, doesn't he?

Anyone fancy finding a little more out about the whole publishing process from someone in the know then?
Ian seems like the most ideal person to follow this up...
I'm quite matey with David Moody (author of the 'Autumn' series etc and also the guy behind Infected Books), so I can ask him about it all as well.

Ian has asked me to pop in on this thread and see if I can' answer a few questions.
Over £800 for 10 books is stupid.... My printing house in York could do 500 copies for less than £2000... do the math.
If you had 25 authors, each supplying a 10 page story giving you approx a 250 page book and each author was willing to pay an equal amount into the publishing you could easily do it.
Each could author recieve an equal share of the print run to sell themselves or give away. Each author could then probably get their local waterstones to stock a couple of signed copies.
Trying to get books in bulk onto shelves is very hard right now. We have a contact and he has explained how the shops are now cutting back to a core stock of bigger publishers.
ISBN's are easy to get. If you set up a writers collective with plans to publish more than one book it would be worth buying your own, a number linked to whatever you decided to call the company. These cost about £100 for ten.
You would need someone in charge so that these ISBN's were then registered with Neilson etc...
Advertising is the biggest expense and is best done online to keep it cheap. Placing ads in magazines rarely works and costs a small fortune. Giving away review copies helps but isn't cost effective.
I'll think some more about it and answer any

Garry's suggestion sounds like the most viable. I'd be more than happy to contribute both as a author, with the cover artwork and as an investor as stated earlier.
If we had 25 authors all promoting the book on forums etc, then I think we would be able to spread the word easily and cheaply. 25 individuals can cover a lot of forums!!! And we'd probably have a lot of connections between all 25 of us.

Promotion does work. This board is the living proof of that.
6 weeks ago BHN didn't exist. 67 members and 2000 post later...
Granted, a lot of the posts are just random nonsense.
(I win anyone?)
But even so we still have a large amount of good quality posts, giving out a lot of information.
If one person (With a little help) can achieve this in six weeks then imagine what 25 can do!

I'm getting some figures worked out for you but you'd probably get more than 500 copies... I'll let you know.

This is all very encouraging. It really could work, and I'd like to help in anyway I can.
Something else to throw in the mix: this would have an even bigger chance of success if we had a well-known author contributing, perhaps a story or two or maybe just a forward.
I believe a certain member on this board called Duffy knows someone who was described as 'a heavyweight on the British horror scene'...
Can we count on his support, Duffy? Perhaps a reprint of Challenging The Wolf to be included in the anthology?

Anyone done any further research into any of this? Any new info on the practicality of the idea?
Any new news full stop?
I've done nothing...sorry!
