I agree that the ending to Shrine is a bit of a cop-out, perhaps because I'm a diehard atheist and that particular resolution lacks credibility for me. Remember that James Herbert is a Catholic - may claim to be a lapsed one, but Catholic thinking sticks with you all your life. I think that may help explain the ending.

Maybe - but I'm a Catholic, too (technically: ie, I was baptised), and that's one of my reasons for being disappointed with certain aspects of the book. The thinking 'sticks with you all your life' ??! I see another thread in the making.

SPOILER ALERT!!!! - If you've not yet read Herbert's novel 'Shrine' then do not read this post.
Right...I admit that it's been many years since I read the novel, but as far as I can remember, the ending was a dramatic (and a somewhat epic) build-up towards this grande finale when suddenly the little girl is shot and it's all over. No massive conclusion. No nothing...just curtains for the scary girl and that's that.
Now...I'm confused where the religious aspects that supposedly surround the novel ruined this for 'non-believers'. Have I forgotten some vital aspect of the novel's ending? It was a long time ago that I read the book, so I may well have forgotten something important about the ending!!!

I wasn't very impressed (although I'm not a fan of graphic novels anyway). It's actually quite hard to get hold of now and goes for a few bob when it turns up on eBay. I've been tempted to sell my copy in the past. But I'm a horder....so I doubt I ever will.

17 years of growing your hair is a frigging long time. I was bored as hell of having dreads. I'd been thinking about cutting them off for a couple of years and finally plucked up the courage. Soooooo glad I did it now. Life is easier without them. No more staring and questions from random members of the public. No more neck ache from headbanging at rock clubs. No more hours of drying them. Man....it's all good. Alas, I've had the username 'dreadlocksmile' for years, and have built up quite a good reputation with it for things like reviews etc. Although I'm now dreadless, I'll be keeping the name. Anyway...here's a few dread removal pics for your entertainment: That last picture is me weighing my dreads afterwards. They came to just shy of 1KG. That's like carrying around a bag of sugar on your swede all day long!

Yeah, I've got the dreads in a bag the attic. Dunno what I'll do with them. Get them out again someday to show the grandkids or something.
My neck ached like hell for four days after lopping off the dreads. Wasn't expecting that. I guess it's something to do with it finally having all the weight taken off it.
Oh, and thanks re my sleeve. I like my heavy black work!

Thanks again. What a nice fella!
I'm currently tattooing my right leg with a similar heavy black design. However, going around the back of the thigh is a damn tricky area to tattoo yourself...

I voted for Domain.
Just thought the apocalyptic element topped it against The Rats - though all were cracking reads.
